WSOP 2009The 2009 World Series of Poker Europe is under way with the first two opening days of the £1,000 + £75 no-limit holdem event completed.  Held at the Empire in London this year’s World Series of Poker Europe has drawn the biggest ever UK poker field, with 608 entries in total.

The 2009 World Series of Poker Europe has drawn some big names to the poker tables too with top poker professionals hoping to pull off some successful betting and bluffing to get their hands on the £136,803 first prize and the coveted gold bracelet.  These including; Phil Hellmuth, Chris Ferguson, Eric Seidel, Phil Ivey, James Akenhead, Annette Obrestad, Raymond Rahme, John Duthie, Barry Greenstein, Neil Channing, Roland de Wolfe, and Jesper Hougaard but many of these players didn’t make it through the opening day.

One of the first casualties of the two opening days was Annette Obrestad who saw her A,J beaten by K,Q, Phil Ivey’s luck ran out when he pushed his A,8 only to see his opponent beat him with two pair while holding A,6 and European Poker Tour founder John Duthie went all in with pocket queens on a queen-high flop but his opponent, who was holding pocket rockets hit a third ace on the river to send Duthie home.  Even pocket rockets took a beating with Jeff Kimber’s aces being pushed all-in against A,K only for the incredibly unlikely scenario of the A,K making a straight and sending Kimber on his way too.

Day two of the opening event at this year’s World Series of Poker Europe get underway at 2pm (UK) with more excitement and more high-profile casualties I’m sure.  If all of this talk of poker has whet your appetite for a game or two then check out our UK Poker reviews section to find an online poker site that suits you.
