When it came to the biggest and best two poker sites continued to lead the way. Once again PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker stayed ahead of the field with more online poker players than anybody else but PokerStars did beat the world record for the largest online poker tournament twice while Full Tilt Poker faced software issues and claims of irregularity.
2009 started with Tom Dwan throwing down the gauntlet to all challengers in a 50,000 hand $1 million challenge. Patrik Antonius took up Dwan’s challenge but after almost a year of playing the pair still has 20,000 hands of poker of to play before a winner is decided. Not quite the poker spectacular that many had hoped for.
However there was plenty of nosebleed poker taking place which was keeping people on the edges of their seats. A new pretender to the high-stakes poker was also born in 2009. The enigmatic ‘Isildur1’ came from nowhere and started showing the game's elite how to play poker by removing huge sums of cash from them at Full Tilt Poker. Isildur1 started out by turning $60,000 into $1.6 million and then took $5 million from Tom Dwan before losing it all and more in a dramatic implosion which was watched by the whole of the poker world.
21-year-old Joe Cada became the youngest ever poker world champion when he rode out his luck to take the prestigious WSOP main event bracelet and bag himself $8.5 million en route, taking down some big names along the way including poker legend Phil Ivey.
So that was 2009, let’s see what 2010 has in store for the world of poker.
