Victory came for Ivey after going behind to veteran player John Monnettee who went home with $59,586 for his second place finish.  Ivey, the Full Tilt Poker sponsored player had one of the shortest stacks on the final table at the start of the third day but his talent and experience eventually shone through with confident re-raises and steals.  After a gruelling round of heads-up against Monnettee to take the win Ivey was asked ‘What does it mean winning gold bracelet number six for Phil Ivey?’ and in true enigmatic Ivey style he responds ‘It means I am one step closer to number seven!’

A number of deuce-to-seven tournaments have been held at the WSOP since 1973. Previously, deuce-to-seven has been played pretty much exclusively by high stakes cash game professionals and at the WSOP. This format of poker rarely finds its way into public card rooms and casinos.  However, it is rapidly becoming more popular to the uk poker player.

Deuce-to-seven lowball means the lowest ranked hand wins the pot. The very best possible 2-7 lowball hand is 2-3-4-5-7 of mixed suits. An ace counts as a high card. Flushes and straights count against the player. While a wheel is the perfect hand in standard lowball, in deuce-to-seven it is usually a losing hand since the straight counts against the player.

Ivey declared after the win that he very rarely plays this format making him even more proud of his achievements.  The 32 year old claims that he will win at least 30 WSOP bracelets in his career. The current record is held by Phil Hellmuth with 11 WSOP bracelets to his name so far.
