National Poker Week

National Poker WeekIn the 40th anniversary year of the World Series of Poker, at a press conference in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Monday, former US Senator Alphonse D'Amato, chairman of the Poker Players Alliance announced that 19th- 25th July will be National Poker Week in the US.

National Poker Week is an initiative to raise the profile of both land-based and online poker and change the old stereotypical perception that people have of poker and its players.  National Poker Week will also give the Poker Players Alliance the opportunity to take the next step in its ongoing mission to push for the legalisation of online poker in the US.  The Poker Players Alliance will send over 30 State Directors and at least 6 professional poker players including; Howard Lederer, Andy Bloch, Annie Duke, Jan Fisher, Linda Johnson and Dennis Phillips to Washington D.C.  The Poker Players Alliance representatives will meet with members of congress and lobby for the legalisation and regulation of online poker, claiming that games such as poker, backgammon and mahjongg are games of skill and therefore should be exempt from the UIGEA laws as stated in Barney Frank’s bill.  The Poker Players Alliance will also deliver a petition to US President Barak Obama asking for his support to such an exemption and for the licensing and regulation of online poker.

There are 10 million online poker players in the US growing steadily frustrated regarding this matter and after the FBI ordered the freeze of over $30 million worth of winning funds from players at Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars the frustration has built.  Since the UIGEA came into effect many online poker sites including some UK poker sites have closed their doors to US players for fear of severe financial penalty as in the case of Party Poker.  If you want to show your support to this cause then head over to www.PokerPetition.com and sign the petition.
