High-stakes poker prodigy

Over the last couple of years online poker has seen the rise of a high-stakes poker prodigy who has the ability to be the best player in the world, if he isn’t already.  This player has not only beaten the world’s very best poker players online but he has done if for hundreds of thousands of dollars in a single hand of poker, as if it was for pocket change.  But who exactly is Tom Dwan?

Tom Dwan is a 23 year old US poker professional from New Jersey who has taken the poker world by storm.  So much so that at this tender age he was nominated as one of this year’s Poker Hall of Fame candidates.  Dwan has taken on the world’s very best poker players such as Phil Hellmuth Jr, Gus Hansen, Patrick Antonius and Phil Ivey and has won.

At the age of 17 Dwan started playing online poker with a $50 bankroll.  He began by playing $6 nine-player sit n’ go’s before moving to the more profitable cash tables.  Here Dwan used careful bankroll management to work his way through the stake levels until he was playing $500/$1,000 cash tables, and since has seemingly become unstoppable.  Dwan, whose online username is ‘durrrr’ has so much confidence in his cash table abilities that he has laid down a $1 million challenge to anybody, except Phil Galfond, to play him online heads-up for 50,000 hands.  If his opponent is ahead after 50,000 hands, Dwan agrees to give them $500,000 plus $1,000,000. If Dwan is ahead he will just win $500,000.

Dwan has played in live poker events such as PokerStars European tour, the World Poker Tour, the Aussie Millions and the World Series of Poker.  He has also made many TV appearances on poker shows such as Poker After Dark, Full Tilt Poker's Million Dollar Cash Game and most recently High Stakes Poker.

So from a humble $50 and a computer in his bedroom Tom Dwan has already become one of the most feared high-stakes online players in poker history, with over $1 million earned from his relatively short live poker career and an astounding $5.4 million won playing at Full Tilt just in 2008.  So what next for Tom Dwan?
