Footballers take on poker stars

In recent weeks we have seen some serious betting from the world of football.  While ex-England striker Teddy Sheringham was taking on the some of the world’s best poker players Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina was making bets with poker legend Daniel Negreanu.  It’s not unusual to see footballers take on poker stars but we don’t often see them win.

Amateur poker player Teddy Sheringham stumped up the £10,000 buy-in and entered the recent World Series of Poker Europe in London.  This year’s WSOPE, London drew huge names from the world of poker who came together to do battle at the poker tables, however this didn’t stop poker enthusiast Sheringham from getting stuck in against them.  After some bluffing and successful betting Sheringham battled through the 300 strong field, only narrowly missing out on a final table finish but still managing 14th to earn himself £40,000 for his efforts.

In another poker news story about footballers taking on poker players Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina has challenged Canadian poker star Daniel Negreanu to a bet of his own, only this time it will be the poker player who will be out of their usual playing field.  The Spanish goalkeeper, formerly of FC Barcelona and Villarreal who now stands between the posts at Anfield has challenged Negreanu to a different type of bet.  Reina has bet poker player Negreanu $12,000 that he won’t be able to score a single penalty against him in 5 attempts.  Never one to shy away from a prop bet Negreanu accepted the bet and I’m sure he will seek out some advice from some of the world’s best penalty takers.
